Rio de Janeiro Imperial Palace - Paço Imperial

A prestigious history.
Though the Paço Imperial is today home to a major cultural centre, the building itself is mainly famous for its beautiful colonial architecture. Situated on Praça XV in the heart of the city, this 18th century former residence of local governors has served many purposes over the years. Initially a home, it was later the official office for the Brazilian Viceroy, for King Joao IV of Portugal, and for a succession of Brazilian Emperors.
