Rio de Janeiro Imperial Palace

A prestigious history.
Though the Paço Imperial is today home to a major cultural centre, the building itself was made famous for its stunning colonial architecture. Situated on Praça IV in the heart of the city and dated to the 18th century, this former residence of local governors has served many purposes. A residence at first, it was later the official office for the Brazilian Vice-Roy, for king Joao IV of Portugal, and for a succession of Brazilian Emperors.
